Canon: Devil Survivor 2
Canon Point: Episode 5, pre-canon
AU/CRAU: Yes to AU, although it's still in canon-verse! (They're the child version of their adult selves)
Age: 9 years old
History: here's a wiki about Yamato's past, but it's not very extensive, sadly, so I'll beef it up a little:

The Hotsuin family has served a certain purpose for well over eight hundred years: to defend Japan against threats of the supernatural kind. They are raised to think of themselves as Japan's shadow, trained in the arts of demon summoning and granted the responsibility to control the great power of the 'Dragon Stream'. In time, this birthed a military organisation within Japan's government called JP's (Japan Meteorological Agency, Geomagnetism Research Department), an organisation where every Hotsuin since becomes the Chief Director, managing the protection of Japan from the shadows. This means that they put their heirs through a rigorous upbringing that crushes any form of love or compassion out of them to turn them, essentially, into cold, logical soldiers.

Which leads us onto Yamato's history. That link summarises what occurred between Alcor and Yamato, which is the only part of the history that's relevant to Yamato at this point. Yamato's potential and talent pinged Alcor's radar, leading him to believe that Yamato would have the power to push humanity onto the path of a new, better world. Although, as Yamato grew older, his style of upbringing and talent made him jaded and disdainful of ordinary people, and in time, he believed that the only way a better world could be made was to 'refine' humanity - those with talent and potential would sit at the top, and those who were lazy, talentless or useless, would die out via survival of the fittest, leaving humanity stronger and better. It's a pretty dark ideology for such a young child, but it's one Yamato was inspired towards after learning of the upcoming trials that humanity would be put through: namely, Polaris (a star alien that's also God it's kind of weird), would grant humanity's wish if they managed to overcome the trials of the Septentrione. If Yamato succeeded, he could wish for humanity's mindset to be changed towards meritocracy, which would be pretty, uh, bad.

As Yamato is up to nine years old, that's the extent of his history so far. If you need clarification on anything, don't hesitate to ask!

Personality: How to describe bitty Yamato Hotsuin?

Firstly, he's a very very very intelligent child. He devours and processes knowledge at a terrifying rate, quickly outstripping the abilities of his tutors within weeks. When this happens, Yamato isn't shy about dismissing them from services with very blunt, or downright rude words, calling them "trash" if he feels that their capabilities are below his. Aside from that, Yamato is a very calm, well spoken individual, and very rarely loses his temper or shows signs of other strong emotions. In fact, his emotions, whenever they are rarely glimpsed, are very subdued and measured, always placed under careful control even at such a young age.

However, despite his intelligence and control, he is greatly ignorant on people and how to socialise with them due to his childhood of pure and total isolation. His life is filled with nothing but books and training, his only point of contact being his tutors (that he goes through like tissue paper), his demon familiar Cerberus, and Alcor, a star alien. Needless to say, his views on socialising and speaking to people are somewhat screwed up due to this. He speaks bluntly and without empathy, stating things matter of factedly even if they're considered 'mean' or 'rude'.

Not that he gives a shit if he's mean or rude anyway. He doesn't like people in general, especially weak or incompetent people. He honestly wouldn't care if they keeled over and died in front of him (and indeed, some 'incompetent' people did die due to him summoning Cerberus, and he only noted their deaths with mild disgust, not regret or horror). He doesn't have sadistic or twisted satisfaction in witnessing weak people being killed, but he doesn't mind either.

This means he comes across as very cold or inhuman. Indeed, his expression barely shifts, and his tone doesn't modulate, which can give a very uncanny impression at times. He isn't completely cold, though - he does show signs of interest towards civilian things whenever he gets a glimpse of them. An example would be the takoyaki stand when he was driving back from a tea ceremony. He briefly had an expression of childish awe, and asked what it was - only to be shut down by his tutor that it was something "he wouldn't be interested in". Another example would be whenever he spends his time with Alcor - he actually smiles and makes childish comments, such as that the only way he can lose is if he admits defeat when playing chess.

In the anime, Yamato and Alcor are shown to have a close relationship during his childhood years. Even if they did nothing but sit together in silence while Yamato read a book, they were comfortable in one another's company - something that persisted well into Yamato's adult years. Even when they stood at opposite sides, Yamato was strangely keen to have Alcor remain despite telling him frequently to leave, or that they had no use for him. Blowing hot and cold... this is something Yamato does often, and something only someone as patient as Alcor can tolerate in large doses.

But blowing hot was something Yamato only did towards Alcor. Towards his tutors, Yamato was cold and apathetic. He wasn't cruel or arrogant towards them, but he did speak his mind if he felt they were incompetent, or had nothing left to teach him. If he outstripped them, he would tell them he no longer had any use for them - and that was how he was taught to view people: use. Was this person useful? Was this person valuable? Would they benefit towards this goal? Was it worth it to listen to them? Did they teach valuable things? If they scored negative on any of these things, then Yamato would not pay the time of day to them. He would prefer to sit alone in his library, reading and devouring knowledge with only Cerberus for company - or Alcor.

As for friends... only Alcor would count for one, and that's only if one was being generous. Yamato would state that he only played with Alcor because of him being an observer of humanity - and thus was interesting. However, Alcor is the only one Yamato is comfortable around, and whom he lets his guard down a tiny bit during childhood. Yamato hasn't had any contact with anyone else to claim as a friend, and that is something he is perfectly content with. Being alone, living only to fulfil his duties as Chief of JP's... it's something Yamato, as a child, was content with, before he discovered his dream of a world of meritocracy. To say it bluntly, Yamato is a fucked up child, with a very fucked up perception of the world and people in general.

Debt: After weighing the pros and cons between The Witch and Polaris, Yamato decided that wishing for a world of meritocracy and competent people had a higher chance of success without the human race becoming extinct if he tried his wish with The Witch.

Suitability: Truthfully, Yamato would be interesting in that, he was born into a very well to-do family, with his every need catered to - but was also born into a life of servitude (which he knew at a very young age) towards Japan, so enduring serving someone isn't anything new to him. Although, his 'serving' is normally him devouring intellectual knowledge and learning to summon demons and cast magic to protect it from supernatural threat, as opposed to cleaning floors, physically serving customers, and doing other menial tasks. He was raised like a little prince, after all. However, Yamato prides himself on excelling at any task put before him, even if it's a 'commoner' job. Yamato's all about putting the effort in, so he wouldn't half-ass something simply because it's strange, new, or hard.

As for being forced to work for the witch - Yamato would expect something like it, but would resolve to endure his debt and work towards paying it off as quickly as possible. So he would be quite aggressive about doing whatever he can to shave down his debt, even if it means taking up extra, shitty jobs. Even from a young age, Yamato's all about stoically enduring, even if he resents it. He just bottles it all up into an emotional molotov cocktail.

Inventory:

> His smart, civilian clothing, as well as his ritualistic robes used during demon summoning
> One of his favourite books - he's a voracious reader, so he'll probably try to get more within the game as well

Abilities: Yamato has the canon ability to summon the powerful demon Cerberus, and maintain his body in the human world for an indefinite amount of time (in the anime, Yamato, as a child, is able to keep Cerberus permanently summoned, without any visible strain on his body, even though doing so continuously drains the summoner's energy). As this is child!Yamato though, this will be the only ability he has, as it's the only one shown in the anime, as opposed to his adult self which possessed a slew of other abilities (most likely gained through age and experience).

Strengths: His vast intellect and terrifying ability to learn things at a rapid rate. As a child, at five years old, he outstrips many of his tutors in fields like astrophysics and the like within short time frames. He also has massive reserves of spiritual power, that he spends mostly maintaining Cerberus's body in the human world.

Weaknesses: However, in exchange for his intellect, he's absolutely clueless about interacting with other people. He's curt, almost rude, in his way of speaking, yet has no inflection or tone. He comes across as a 'creepy child' sometimes, because of this, but the only meaningful social interaction he's had is with a star alien and a fire breathing demon dog, so one can't expect him to have good social skills - or human empathy. His emotional knowledge is also very weak, and he tends to bottle up, rather than dealing with difficult feelings. He's also quite fragile, physically, partly because he's a child, and partly because he's built like a glass canon in the game (his vitality and speed stats are pitifully low, while his strength and magic stats are maximised).
